Safe Routes to School - Back from Winter Break Tips:

Winter can make walking to your destination a challenge. If the sidewalks and walkways are impassable and you have to walk on the street, walk facing oncoming traffic and as close to the curb/side of the road as possible. Proper gear is a must, but wearing dark winter colors may make it difficult for motorists to see you. Wear a brightly-colored scarf or hat. Wear reflective gear if you are walking early dawn or dusk when motorists have a more difficult time seeing pedestrians. Don't forget to wear gloves and boots with non-slip soles. Know that snow that has accumulated into drifts can muffle the sounds of approaching motor vehicles. Hats and scarves that cover your ears can muffle or even block these sounds too. Keep warm, but dress so that you can hear what's going on around you in addition to being able to move your head freely to see well on your way to school. Stay safe on your way to school this winter!
